How to Fix a Keurig Coffee Maker
Keurig coffee makers brew your favorite cup of coffee quickly while freeing up extra time to do other things. But after prolonged use, especially if you use it daily, your machine can stop functioning properly and it needs your intervention to restore it to the way it was before. Here are the most common problems experienced by Keurig users and what you can do to solve them.
Difficulty: Easy
Things you’ll need:
Bottled or filtered water
Vinegar
Paper clip or toothpick
Charcoal-filtering device
Instructions:
1. The water lines of Keurig machines are rather thin and sometimes they can become clogged. You know this is the case when your brewer is brewing normally but the result is little or no coffee produced. To resolve this you need to run a few cups of water through the machine without a K-Cup inside. This will usually clear any buildup.
2. The exit needle (the pin) can also become clogged with grinds and needs to be cleaned up by using either a paper clip or a toothpick.
3. The effects of calcium mineral buildup can be avoided by descaling your coffee maker at regular intervals, usually 3-6 months. This is accomplished by running a cycle of vinegar through the lines. You may see recommendations for specific products for this task, but vinegar does its job just fine.
4. Some mineral buildup can also make your coffee taste terrible. So if you find that your brewer is working well but the coffee doesn’t taste right, you can try using charcoal filtering devices. Still, if your water is hard this may solve the problem only momentarily so you might need to start thinking about using filtered or bottled water to brew your coffee.
Tips & Warnings
- If your Keurig machine still has a vinegar odor after cleaning, it’s recommended to brew 3-4 cycles of water before you get back to regular use.
